Great People do Things Before they’re Ready
“Great people do things before they’re ready.
They do things before they know they can do it.” – Amy Poehler
I have heard this a lot. Heard about really awesome people who have…… doubts! Yet all we ever see is the end result. The successes. We don’t see all the toil that came before, because before the success, no one paid attention to their story.
We also tend to forget that even these people are human. And if one human can be great despite the hurdles and doubts of life, then we all can. And that is splendid news.
Am I Worthy?
There is a long list of great people who have impostor syndrome; where you think you are not good enough to be in the position you are in. That you don’t really know what you are doing, that eventually you will have your job or degree taken from you, once people find out you are a fraud.
If any of this makes sense to you, then worry not. You are in great company. Many high achievers still feel like this. Of course it is also fabulous if you don’t feel like a fraud. Well done to you. Personally, I have talked about impostor syndrome before and how I always felt like a fraud at ballet school whenever I had to wear a tutu.
But it turns out that lots of people feel like they are making it all up as they go along. Hooray for this information! It comforts me greatly. I am taking it as a signal that I am on the right track, pushing myself out of my comfort zones, forging ahead in developing new skills and finding ways to share my voice.
Do it Anyway
The point is, don’t let your fears of ‘faking it’ hold you back. Yes we all have doubts. Yes we will be scared at times, but this needn’t dictate our lives. And the more we practice doing things before we feel ‘ready’, the better we will get at doing so. Besides how can we ever feel ready for something new? It is just like exercising regularly, we feel stronger and really gain power the more we practice.
So let’s take it as a good sign if we feel like a fraud sometimes. We are pushing the boundaries. We are growing, and only good can come out of personal growth.

There is a great book by Amy Cuddy called ‘Presence’. She talks about faking it ’till you make it, and gives great tips to help us bring our ‘boldest self to our biggest challenges’. It’s a wonderful read!
