How De-cluttering can Change Your Life
Clutter clutter everywhere
There was a day not so long ago that I pondered on the implications of my untidiness. Of course it was a reflection of my cluttered mental state, I could feel it. But instead of fixing my mental clutter first – as I had been attempting – I wondered if tidying could improve my mental clutter.
Then of course in the next couple of days, as this was on my mind, I came across a book called The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying. It was highly praised by every review so I ordered it and eagerly awaited its wisdom!
Just to note, I am still surprised I have read a book about tidying, let alone implemented it and now enthusiastically sharing it’s ideas! I am normally untidy. I don’t put things back in their places, often things don’t have a place, and so my home gets cluttered. And I have had enough.
Time for Change
So the book came and within a day I had read half of it and was ready to tackle my first category. Clothes. The rule to this fun task is asking yourself if the item sparks joy for you. If it does it stays, if not say goodbye. Sounds harsh? Maybe, but with such a simple and lovely rule I quickly found my yes pile looking exciting and making me smile, whilst I was also letting go of items from my past.
Self-Development through tidying! I loved it. Letting go of things you used to love but don’t any more feels like a great way to connect with the present. To connect with who you are right now. Not to a future you either – who ‘may’ need or like this jumper one day… You are you now, so you may as well be this current you fully.
Since discarding 5 bin bags of clothes I have also cleared out approximately 150 books, making nearly £100 on sites such as Ziffit. Shredded over a decade of unnecessary paperwork – highly therapeutic! It also showed me perspective; of how long ago some events were, which lead to more letting go of the past.
Now of course I am hooked and continuing my possessions-detox until I have de-cluttered my home and in turn my mind.
It is important to ask yourself why you want to de-clutter and stay clutter-free. I found this brilliant article that hits it right on head!
